Turkey vs Portugal preview
This match is scheduled for June 22, 2024, at Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund), with kickoff at 1:00 PM ET.
Despite facing a Georgian team that has never appeared at a major tournament, Turkey had to work hard for their matchday one win.
After a positive and forward-thinking start, they took the lead midway through the first half with a superb volley from right-back Mert Muldur. They nearly doubled their lead a minute later, but Kenan Yildiz's goal was ruled offside.
Five minutes later, the Georgians equalized with a well-crafted goal. Turkey continued to press forward, coming close several times after the break, before Real Madrid wonderkid Arda Guler found the top corner with a fine strike. They then withstood some pressure before adding a third goal on the break right at the end. While their defense wasn’t stellar, their creativity in possession and varied attacking threats were impressive.
Portugal also got the job done on matchday one, but not without a serious scare. With Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva seemingly focused on feeding veteran Cristiano Ronaldo during an underwhelming first half, they struggled creatively and faced a few rocky moments at the back.
Those rocky moments culminated in Lukáš Provod scoring from the edge of the box after an hour. Portugal quickly leveled the score, then shifted gears, creating more opportunities, before super-sub Francisco Conceicao grabbed the winner in injury time just minutes after coming on.
We know this Portugal side has lots of quality, especially in the final third, so they likely have more to offer. However, their first game showed they can be vulnerable, giving hope to a decent-looking Turkish attack.
Turkey vs Portugal betting picks
Just one bet stands out at the early prices, favoring the Turks. Here goes:
Turkey to Score Over 1.5 Goals
The Portuguese are heavily favored in early betting, but as we’ve seen already in this tournament, things don’t always go as expected.
The value lies in betting on Turkish goals. Sure, they only faced Georgia, European Championship novices and rank outsiders, but the Turks showed promise in their first game. There's little reason why they can’t trouble a Portuguese side that looked too open against the Czechs for my liking.
Despite having plenty of offensive quality, Portugal has kept just one clean sheet (against the Republic of Ireland) in their last six games. They've conceded at least twice on four occasions, surrendering multiple goals to Sweden, Slovenia, Finland, and Croatia.
This Turkish team also has a recent history of thriving on the break against big teams, scoring three goals against Germany in late 2023.
All in all, the +275 odds on the Turks scoring at least two goals in this match, even if they don't come out on top, seem generous. I’m taking those odds, are you?
