MLS picks and best bets
There are three bets, all of which of the player prop variety, that stand out ahead of this round of fixtures, so let’s dive in and see where the value lies:
Sam Surridge Anytime Scorer
(Columbus Crew vs Nashville SC)
I’m not quite sure how Sam Surridge is being priced at +300 to score here. Sure, a road game against the Crew is far from easy, but this Nashville team isn’t completely unused to getting results on the road, while Surridge has shown a clean ability to score goals in big games since entering Major League Soccer.
The former Premier League forward has also scored in big traveling games this season, notching two away against TFC recently, plus he also scored away against Inter Miami earlier in the campaign.
It’s very much worth remembering that this is a forward with seven goals to his name this term, not to mention an average of 0.45 goals per game. Throw in the fact that he’s looked hungry of late, shooting nine times in his last three games, and the Englishman becomes easy to bet on at eye-catching odds.
Hugo Cuypers Anytime Scorer
(Chicago Fire vs Philadelphia Union)
As mentioned in my main Chicago vs Philadelphia picks article, Hugo Cuypers looks a good bet to score here.
Sure, the Belgian took a while to warm to the task in Major League Soccer, not exactly hitting the ground running, despite bringing fine goal-scoring pedigree, but he’s now starting to motor along in terms of goals.
Cuypers recently scored for the first time in four games against Orlando, before going on to score in four games straight. He didn’t find the net last time out, but he’s scored in each of his last two at home, while playing against an open-looking Union side should suit the poacher.
Chicago’s frontman recently thrived playing in open games against Orlando and Toronto, so he should be suited by this fixture given the Union’s willingness to come out and play as opposed to sitting back.
Moreover, Cuypers averages a very respectable 0.38 goals per 90 minutes this season, while he’s taking an average of 2.34 shots per game.
Bongokuhle Hlongwane Anytime Scorer
(Minnesota vs Vancouver Whitecaps)
I’m also very much drawn to another goalscorer bet ahead of this mid-week Major League Soccer bonanza.
Minnesota’s Bongokuhle Hlongwane has enjoyed himself recently, notching two goals in his last three games, so I really wouldn’t want to bet against him ahead of a game against a Whitecaps side that has done anything but keep it tight in recent weeks.
In fact, I very much want Hlongwane on my side here. The South African has shown himself to be capable of scoring a variety of goals this season, playing well off the shoulder and running in behind, while he has poacher’s instincts too, as he showed last weekend with that opener against Vancouver.
Hlongwane now has five goals in Major League Soccer this time around, averaging a rather impressive 0.47 goals per 90 minutes. To be honest, that stat alone makes odds of +180 (DraftKings Sportsbook) look a little large.
