MLS picks and best bets

Having previewed two of the games taking place this weekend, providing a selection of bets, these are the best of the best. The bets that simply must be placed if you’re looking for value plays.

Lewis Morgan Anytime Scorer

(Colorado Rapids vs New York Red Bulls)

As mentioned when previewing this fixture from a betting point of view in general, Lewis Morgan looks generously priced to score this weekend, so much so that he definitely goes down as one of the best bets.

The NYRB forward hasn’t scored since returning from international duty, but when making his first start against Philly last time out, he looked hungry for goals, that’s for sure.

At the end of the day, we know that Morgan has some obvious offensive qualities, qualities that make him one of the top marksmen in the league, and in my eyes, the odds available here are a little generous.

Let’s not forget that this is a man who currently averages 0.57 goals per 90 minutes in Major League Soccer this season.

Austin FC to Win

(Austin vs Seattle Sounders)

This is a fixture between two strong teams, make no mistake about that, and I’m certainly not saying that the hosts are sure-fire winners here. However, given how strong they are at home, Josh Wolff’s men simply look too big in the early betting.

The Austin boys arrive here with their tails up after that encouraging win over a very good NYCFC side, while they’ve won six of their last eight at home, beating top teams like the Los Angeles Galaxy, which is hard to ignore.

We know that the Sounders aren’t easy to face, but we also know that they do their best work at home. On the road, they’ve been inconsistent, while they’ve also conceded more goals than they’ve scored away from the comforts of Lumen Field this season.

For my money, the home win here is more likely than the early odds suggest, so betting on an Austin win at odds of +145 (DraftKings) offers some clear value for money.

Daniel Gazdag Anytime Scorer

(Toronto FC vs Philadelphia Union)

Another player who massively caught the eye in that Philadelphia Union vs New York Red Bulls game last weekend was Daniel Gazdag.

Now, it’s no secret that the Hungarian, who is now the Union’s all-time leading scorer in MLS, carried a huge threat, but for my money, that threat isn’t being accurately represented in the early betting ahead of Philly’s trip to Toronto this weekend.

The hosts have struggled hugely to keep things tight, which should leave someone as dangerous as Gazdag licking his lips here.

He failed to notch last weekend, but created the impression that his next goal isn’t far away, taking up several promising positions, shooting four times, and hitting the target twice.

The Union’s main man has scored an eye-catching average of 0.66 goals per 90 minutes this season, averaging a hugely promising 0.63 xG per game. Don’t be surprised if he fires home here, I certainly won’t be.
