As this showdown between Russia and Colombia takes place on Mexican soil, I’m very much of the opinion that Veronika Kudermetova is being overlooked in the early betting.
The Russian made light work of winning her first-round match at this tournament, brushing aside the challenge of a lower-ranked player, and while this is tougher on paper, I really wouldn’t be too surprised if she got the job done here, something which on all available evidence, appears to be more likely than the early odds suggest.
Osorio also came through her first test at this tournament without struggling, though she’s now up against a much higher-ranked player, as opposed to a lower-ranked player.
The Colombian doesn’t have the best recent record against players ranked above her, losing each of her last three such matches. She’s also lost five of her last six hard-court matches against players of a higher standing.
At the end of the day, the Russian is the much higher-ranked player for a reason, so she should be getting a little more respect here, as the table above shows. Betting on Kudermetova to win at the early odds simply offers value for money, which is key to long-term profit in this game.
