Varvara Gracheva vs Hailey Baptiste picks
As the table above suggests, there may just be some value for money to be had by betting on the French player to get the job done.
Varvara Gracheva to Win
Having come through two qualifying rounds, Hailey Baptiste is the early favorite ahead of this match and I’m not saying that she should be a big outsider here, absolutely not, but really?
Sure, those qualifying wins mean that she’s had more time to get used to the courts in Beijing leaving her well placed to perform well in this match, but let’s face it, Gracheva is ranked 49 places above her for a reason.
What’s more, Baptiste doesn’t have the best record against players of Gracheva’s caliber. Losing each of her recent two hard-court matches against players ranked 60th or higher, losing both of those matches in straight sets.
On all surfaces, Baptiste has lost seven out of seven against players ranked inside the top 60 since May, losing six of those matches in straight sets.
Gracheva may not have the most inspiring recent record, but we mustn’t ignore the fact that she’s been unlucky in terms of who she has come up against. At the US Open, she lost to Coco Gauff (world number six and Grand Slam champion), while her run in Cincinnati was only ended by world number one Swiatek, whom she took a set from.
Considering that the French player has won four out of four recent hard-court matches against lower-ranked players, winning three of those in straight sets, she really should be considered the favorite here, regardless of whether Baptiste has had more time to practice on these courts.
Recap - Wednesday’s WTA best bets
