The tennis action continues to come thick and fast in Asia, with several tournaments taking place featuring both ATP and WTA players.

On the WTA side of things, it’s all about the China Open, which is our primary port of call from a betting point of view on Saturday. Read on for our WTA tennis predictions.

Saturday’s Tennis Picks

The event in Beijing, best known as the China Open, features some big names this time around and it’s certainly a tournament that is not easy to win. It’s also a tournament that provides a few juicy early-round betting opportunities, such as the one that has arisen in the match between Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Elise Mertens.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto vs Elise Mertens picks

Looking at the early lines, there’s value to be had by placing the following bet:

Elisabetta Cocciaretto +1.5 Set Handicap

I’ll start off by saying that Elise Mertens is a very decent player, one who is capable of pushing the top players at times. However, the Belgian is very inconsistent, which is why she’s not ranked higher than 29th.

Moreover, she hasn’t been showing the best hard-court form over the last couple of weeks, losing to 105-ranked German player Eva Lys in Tunisia when we last saw her.

That tournament in Tunisia took place over two weeks ago, so it’s been a little while since we saw Mertens play competitively, which I don’t think has been considered enough by the early market.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto is another player who hasn’t played match after match of late, but she does have the benefit of already having played at this tournament, beating in-form Aussie Rodionova. That win should have her feeling good ahead of this match, even if the early odds suggest it’ll be an uphill battle for the Italian.

It’s also worth mentioning that Cocciaretto is no stranger to performing well against the inconsistent Mertens. When the pair met earlier in the season, on a hard surface back in February, Cocciaretto won.

If we consider that positive result against Mertens in conjunction with the fact that she’s the one with a recent win (at this tournament) under her belt, then it’s easy to feel that the Italian deserves a bit more respect.

Getting the job done here won’t be easy, but she really should compete, so betting on her to, at the very least, avoid a straight-set defeat is the way to go, especially with odds of -115 on offer.
