We’re now well into the second week of the China Open, which for WTA players, is no small event. Those left in the competition will now be setting their sights on a serious crack at winning what is a sought-after prize.

Two of the quarter-finals have been decided, meaning that there are only four places left up for grabs in the final eight, so things really are starting to heat up in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

Wednesday’s Tennis Picks

The match in question here is the one that will be the final last-16 encounter, featuring Amanda Anisimova and Qinwen Zheng. The American is in good form, but the Chinese player will be keen to make her mark on home soil. Let an intriguing contest begin.

Amanda Anisimova vs Qinwen Zheng picks

Looking at the early lines, a value bet can be placed by taking the American competitor to avoid a straight-set defeat.

Amanda Anisimova +1.5 Set Handicap

As the betting table above shows, Qinwen Zheng, who is playing in her home nation, is the big favorite to win this match.

I agree that the Chinese competitor is the correct favorite. After all, she is the world number seven, ranking 37 places above Anisimova. However, she’s far from up against a no-hoper here, so I’m really not sure that she should be quite as strong as she is at the time of writing.

I’d argue that Zheng has had a relatively straightforward run to this stage, especially given that she’s playing in China. She’s not had to face a higher-ranked player, nor has she had to face a top-50 player. That changes here.

What’s more, the US player, who has been in fine hard-court form in recent months, arrives here having beaten world number 11 Kasatkina in straight sets, so she’ll be full of confidence.

As touched on above, Anisimova is an improving talent, a player who reached the final in Toronto recently, so don’t be surprised if she makes this a real test for her top-ten opponent.

All things considered, there’s value to be had. Amanda Anismova offers more than the early odds suggest, so betting on her to, at the very least, pick up a set, is worth doing while odds of -110 are available.
