Elise Mertens vs Donna Vekic picks

Looking at the early lines, I cannot help but feel that there’s one pick that’s a little generously priced:

Over 2.5 Sets

As the early market suggests, there’s not too much between the pair, so much so that this is definitely a tough match to call.

If you held a gun to my head (please don’t) and told me to bet on one player to win the match, I’d take Mertens, as I feel that there may be a smidgen of value to the Belgian’s early odds, but without the gun, there’s not enough value to get me interested.

Betting on this match to go into a third set does pique my interest, though. The catalyst here is that both players have been very inconsistent of late, with both making mistakes at regular intervals, so it’s far from difficult to see both making hard work of this.

After all, each of Vekic’s last three matches have gone the distance, while Mertens has also been involved in a three-setter in each of her last three matches.

It’s also worth mentioning that both are more than capable of battling hard when necessary, with neither making a habit of losing in straight sets. Mertens only recent straight-set defeat came against world number two Sabalenka, while her Croat opponent hasn’t lost without picking up a set (on hard courts) since March.

I foresee a really good battle here, so much so that the chances of this one going into a third set seem greater than early odds of +145 would have us believe. Therefore, such odds are worth taking.
