When Coco Gauff went a set to the good in rather dominant fashion on Saturday, I thought we were about to cash yet another tennis winner, though we ended up with a losing bet as Aryan Sabalenka came from behind to grind out the win.

We’re now looking ahead to the next tournament for WTA players, which will be the Japan Women’s Open, played in Osaka.

Monday’s WTA Tennis Picks

On Monday, the WTA Osaka match that catches the eye is the one between Lucia Bronzetti and Cristina Bucsa.

Lucia Bronzetti vs Cristina Bucsa picks

With the early lines the way that they are, it’s hard to go against Cristina Bucsa here.

Cristina Bucsa to Win

I’m struggling to see why Cristina Bucsa is not the early favorite here. Listen, I’m not saying that the Spaniard will win this easily, absolutely not, but she is the slightly higher-ranked player, while she’s shown a better level of both form and consistency in recent Asian tournaments than her Italian opponent, so she probably should be the narrow favorite.

Both players come here off the back of a loss, with Bronzetti losing to Xin Wang, while Bucsa lost to Anisimova. Neither player should be judged too harshly for those defeats and the performances there aren’t really what I’m going on here.

Before losing to Anisimova, who I must say has looked very good of late, Bucas won back-to-back matches in Wuhan, while he only lost to finalist Muchova in Beijing.

Prior to that defeat against Muchova, she beat both Mertens and Samsonova, both of whom are ranked much higher than Bronzetti. That level of form is hard to ignore, especially when Bronzetti has struggled to be consistent.

The Italian has only won two matches in Asia and she hasn’t beaten a higher-ranked player yet, losing three out of three such matches. Again, this is hard to ignore.

All in all, the Spaniard has more in favor here and on all available evidence, ought to get the job done. At generous-looking odds, she’s worth betting on to do just that.
