Denis Shapovalov vs Jenchung Shang picks
Looking at the early lines here, Jenchung Shang is hard to oppose, that’s for sure.
Jenchung Shang to Win
Jenchung Shang comes into this match off the back of a defeat, but can we really criticize the Chinese player for losing to Carlos Alcaraz? Absolutely not. He now has a much easier assignment and given his overall hard-court profile, the world number 49 looks a decent bet to take it.
Shang has delivered some strong hard-court performances of late, and we know that he knows how to beat decent players, as we saw when he won five straight matches to secure the title in Chengdu recently.
On his way to winning the tournament in Chengdu back in late September, Shang got the better of Safiullin, Bublik, Hanfmann and Musetti, all of whom are ranked above Shapovalov, which shouldn’t be ignored.
Of course, Denis Shapovalov is a strong competitor, but he’s inconsistent, while he’s arguably not the player that he was or would have been thanks to several injuries.
Last time out, he lost to Shelton in straight sets, while his recent hard-court record isn’t overly impressive, beating only one higher-ranked player in recent times.
In recent months, the Canadian has struggled to get going against higher-ranked players, losing to Shelton (twice), Nakashima and Van De Zandschulp. He’s won just one of his last five hard-court matches against higher-ranked players.
In contrast, Shang has won six of his last seven hard-court matches against lower-ranked players. Such a stat is not easy to ignore.
All in all, there’s clearly more to like about Shang’s chances here than the early odds suggest. At the very least, he should be available at shorter odds, so taking +110 would be a value move.
