Having now gone a decade since they last reached MLS Cup Final, this is a huge game for the Galaxy, who are now within touching distance of the Western Conference final, which would likely see them battle it out with their city rivals for a place in the big one.
Under Greg Vanney, the Galaxy have improved in recent years, so much so that they’ve easily been one of the best Western Conference teams during 2024. Having got the better of the Colorado Rapids in commanding style during the best-of-three round, they’ll likely fancy themselves to keep pushing towards glory.
For the Loons, this is one of their best ever postseason performances, with them missing out on the play-offs last season, following defeat in the first round during both the 2021 and 2022 campaigns.
It was never going to be easy against RSL during the last round, but Eric Ramsay’s men stuck to their task, defending strongly, before pouncing when it mattered most. They’ll now be looking to repeat the trick in Los Angeles.

The hosts are strongly fancied by the early market and it’s not too difficult to see why, though I do think they’re being a little overbet here. The Loons are really not easy to face, as the Galaxy found out, not one but twice, during the regular season.
When the pair met in Minnesota, the Loons scored twice, making very good use of the counter, while they could easily have notched more than the one that they did when losing narrowly at Dignity Health Sports Park back in July.
What’s more, the visitors have thrived at this venue in recent years, scoring three goals in 2023 and three goals in 2022. It’s also not as if the hosts are strangers to being caught out on the break, with them conceding multiple goals at home to the Whitecaps, LAFC, the Timbers and the Rapids in recent times.
We also know that the Loons, who have pace and power in abundance in the forward areas, can score goals on the road. They ended the regular season strongly by scoring two or more away against San Jose, St. Louis and SKC, so don’t be surprised if they make their presence felt in Carson on Sunday afternoon.
