Ipswich vs Chelsea head-to-head statistics
This will be the first time that the teams have met since 2011, when Chelsea won by second goals to nil in an FA Cup match. At the time, Ipswich were a second division team.
Ipswich vs Chelsea preview
This game will take place on 30/12/2024 at Portman Road. Kick off will be at 14:45 EST.
It’s been a tricky campaign for the Tractor Boys, who continue to try and turn the tide, but they really are fighting something of a losing battle.
Sure, Kieran McKenna’s men worked hard at the Emirates last time out. They were organized, disciplined and certainly stuck to their task of frustrating the Gunners, which they did for long spells. Conceding just one goal away against Arsenal is also admirable. Ultimately, though, it was a fifth defeat in six matches.
As things stand, relegation looms large for Monday’s hosts, who’re down in 19th place, three points from safety.
For the Blues, a title push was looking on the cards, but on Boxing Day, their West London neighbours Fulham had other ideas, replacing Chelsea’s Christmas cheer with frustration by striking not once, but twice in the final ten minutes, handing Enzo Maresca’s men their first defeat since October.
Prior to that home defeat against the Cottagers, Maresca’s men had dropped points in just one of their last six league games, but it’s now two games without a win, so they need to improve.
Ipswich vs Chelsea picks
Going by the early lines, just one bet appeals as these two prepare to do battle at Portman Road.
Under 3.0 Asian Total
Both teams will be looking to bounce back, but a lack of goals appeals slightly more than the early odds suggest it should as far as I’m concerned.
First and foremost, the hosts are going to do everything in their power to frustrate here, and although they do struggle to get positive results, they can keep things tight, as we saw last time out against Arsenal.
Moreover, it’s not as if McKenna’s men have made a habit of conceding lots of goals at home, while they’ve not scored many either. In fact, the Tractor Boys have scored one or none in each of their last six at home. They conceded more than once in three of those six, but conceded more than twice just once, meaning that four of those six games contained less than three goals overall.
More than three goals have been scored in only one of Ipswich’s last six home games, while we’ve seen that the visitors can be kept relatively quiet in recent games, with Everton keeping a clean sheet against Chelsea, before Fulham conceded only once against the Blues.
The visitors have the quality to grind out a win at Portman Road, sure, but we know that the hosts will sit back, dig deep and look to disrupt things, so don’t be too surprised if we see a shortage of goals.
