How MLS odds work
To confidently bet on Major League Soccer, it is essential to understand the various types of odds offered by sportsbooks.
Whether you’re betting on an MLS game to win or betting on the total goals scored in a match, MLS betting odds make up every possible wager.
Having a solid understanding of what they mean can significantly improve your betting strategy.
MLS moneyline betting
The moneyline is the most straightforward type of MLS bet.
You’re betting on one of the following outcomes: the home team wins or the away team wins, or the match ends in a draw. Sportsbooks set odds on each possibility based on their likelihood of happening.
Favorites carry negative odds (e.g. -140), meaning you have to bet more to win less. Underdogs carry positive odds (e.g. +220), meaning you have to take a risk to earn a bigger payout.
You can win $220 on a $100 bet if your bet on an underdog at +220 hits.
MLS spread betting
Also referred to as goal-line betting, MLS spreads give one team a number of goals that creates even money between the two sides.
The favorite must win the game by an amount relative to the spread for the bet to pay out, and the underdog is granted a goal cushion.
If LAFC is a -1.5 favorite, they must win by at least two goals to cover the spread.
Conversely, if Austin FC is a +1.5 underdog, they could simply win the match or lose by only one goal, and your bet is a winner.
Spreads give bettors an opportunity to incorporate the margin of victory into their bet, not just win-loss.
MLS totals (over/unders)
Over/under bets focus on the number of goals scored in a match, as opposed to who wins.
A sportsbook will give you a goal total — say, 2.5 — and you have to choose whether the combined score will be more (hit the over) or less (hit the under) than that total.
This is a great market to bet on if you’re looking at how teams play.
For example, a matchup that features attack-heavy clubs like Atlanta United or St. Louis City SC could shift toward the over, whereas clubs that tend to sit back more defensively could allow for better value on the under.
MLS betting lines & Vegas odds
MLS betting lines mean the odds attached to each bet type — moneyline, spread or totals.
You may see the phrase “Vegas odds” mentioned, which basically refers to the odds initially created by the top sportsbooks in Las Vegas, which have historically been seen as the market’s baseline.
Sporting Post monitors MLS odds from the best US sportsbooks.
This lets you compare lines, identify how the market rates each team’s chances, and find the prices with the biggest value to make smarter wagers before and during games each matchday.
