Much of Sunday’s focus will be on the England game, but before we settle in to watch the Three Lions try and not deliver a typical dose of disappointment, there’s the small matter of the Group C opener between Slovenia and Denmark.
Both teams will be looking to lay down a marker and put the pressure on the other pair in this group with a win here, but can either secure a precious three points? Read on for our Slovenia vs Denmark predictions.
Slovenia vs Denmark prediction
For the Slovenia vs Denmark match prediction, we believe the final score will be a 1-1 draw based on our analysis.
There’s a recent history between these two teams after they shared two closely run, hard-fought battles in qualifying, so we shouldn’t be surprised if there’s little between the pair on Sunday.

Slovenia vs Denmark head-to-head statistics
If there’s two teams that know plenty about each other at this tournament, then it might just be Slovenia and Denmark, who shared a qualifying group, meaning that they twice faced off during 2023.
In Slovenia, the pair drew 1-1, before the Danes forged ahead with a 2-1 win in Copenhagen, picking up their fifth win in six renewals of this fixture.
Interestingly, the Slovenians have never beaten the Danes, despite having had six bites at the cherry, first meeting in 1996. This will be the first ever meeting between the pair at a major tournament.
Slovenia vs Denmark preview
This match will be played on Sunday 16/06/2024 at MHPArena in Stuttgart. Kick off will be at 17:00 GMT.
Since the dissolution of Yugoslavia back in 1992, the Slovenians have been going it alone in the world of international football, and they’ve done so without success.
This will be their first major tournament appearance since exiting during the group stages at the 2010 World Cup. Finally, after many years of trying, they’ve reached the European Championships.
What do we know about them? Well, they’ve got one of the best club-football keepers of the last decade or so in Jan Oblak, who has been something of a wall-like presence in between the sticks for Atletico Madrid since 2015, so that’s a decent start.
They’ve also got a couple of tidy outfield players, such as Udinese defender Jaka Bijol, as well as exciting young forward Benjamin Sesko, who plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
As a team, they’ve proven to be hard to beat in recent times, losing just June of 2023, while they’ll enter this Group C opener unbeaten in six, four of which they’ve won, including a win over Portugal.
Of course, we know much more about the Danes, who’ve been a constant presence at big tournaments for many decades now.
Winners of this competition back in 1992, the men in red and white reached the semi-final at the COVID-delayed 2020 version, where they were edged out by England in extra-time.
Since that final-four appearance at Wembley in 2021, they’ve continued to look strong, beating plenty of decent opponents, such as Serbia, France (twice), Austria (twice), while they come here off the back of pleasing warm-up wins against both Sweden and Norway.
Several of their first-team players operate at a high level for top European clubs, so there’s little reason why they can’t once again go far.
Slovenia vs Denmark Betting tips
Ahead of Sunday’s opener in Group C, I’ve settled on two plays at what for me look like value-offering odds.
Both Teams to Score
I’ve landed on ‘Both Teams to Score’ several times ahead of the early games at Euro 2024, the simple reason being that I think such a bet is being offered up at slightly generous odds a little too often, and this is another example of that.
As mentioned above, the pair played each other not once but twice in 2023, with both teams finding the net at least once in each of those fixtures.
The Danes controlled possession on both occasions, as they likely will here, showing plenty of creativity and threat through the likes of Delaney, Poulsen, Eriksen and Hojland, and we’ll probably see something similar here.
However, the Slovenians were a threat in those games too, especially on the break, while in Sesko and Sporar they have two in-form forwards that can certainly trouble rear-guards.
Denmark’s opponents have also not failed to score for a year, notching in 12 straight matches, but have struggled for clean sheets against significant opponents, leaving me to conclude that the chances of both finding the net here are a little greater than the early odds suggest.
Benjamin Sesko to Score
If the Slovenians are to enjoy some offensive luck in this game, then Benjamin Sesko will likely have a big hand to play, and for my money, he’s well worth betting on to score at odds of 15/4 with bet365.
At just 21, Sesko is arguably the leading light for Slovenia, certainly out on pitch anyway, while he’s proved this season that he can cut it in one of the big leagues, which should hold him in good stead here.
Moreover, the youngster, who scored 14 league goals in 31 appearances last term, plays his domestic football in Germany, so he has familiarity on his side here.
For the national side, he’s well established too, scoring nine goals in his last 18 appearances in a Slovenia shirt, averaging 0.48 goals per 90 minutes. Not bad at all.
If we throw into the mix averages of 2.77 shots and 1.47 shots on target per game in the Bundesliga, not to mention a very eye-catching average of 0.63 expected goals for Leipzig in eight Champions League appearances last season, odds of 15/4 look very sizable indeed.
