This will be the third time that Austria and France have met on the pitch since June 2022 having recently shared a UEFA Nations League group, with the pair drawing 1-1 in Vienna, before France won 2-0 in Paris.

Without being overly eye-catching, the Austrians are rather good. They’ve been a constant presence at the European Championship in the last decade, while the current crop know how to get a result, that must be said.
Ahead of the tournament, the men managed by Ralf Rangnick held a decent Swiss side to a 1-1 draw, which followed six straight wins, and I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking: “I bet they’ve played a load of rubbish”.
In thinking that, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. Wins against Azerbaijan and Estonia warrant few plaudits, but wins against Germany, Turkey and Serbia merit plenty of respect, that’s for sure.
They’ve got creative players, loads of experienced campaigners, while they don’t give much away, which for me, is a recipe for relative success.
As far as the French are concerned, there’s not much that really needs to be said. They’re very good, usually aren’t far away and they’ve got a squad more than capable of winning this prestigious prize.
However, if we look at their recent efforts, it’s probably fair to say that Les Bleus have underwhelmed a little, which isn’t ideal ahead of a major tournament.
In their final warm-up game, they pressed and pushed but couldn’t deliver a telling blow when drawing 0-0 against Canada, while they’ve won just two of their last five, one of which was against Luxembourg.
Since March, they’ve not only drawn against the Canadians, but they’ve been beaten by Germany, and quite soundly, while they drew with Greece also. Not exactly the inspiring result.
When it comes down to it, though, they’ll likely shift through the gears and with what can only be described as an embarrassment of footballing riches, they ought to do well at this tournament.

From a betting point of view, I’m of the opinion that this is certainly not a game to go mad in, so much so that I’m settling for just one play at the early odds.

I like ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ at odds of 6/5 with bet365. I think such a bet could be priced a little shorter and it wouldn’t be unfair.
Sure, the French have lots of offensive quality, but given their recent efforts, it may take them a while to get going, plus facing a defiant Austria side first time out doesn’t exactly present them with an opportunity to go crazy in front of goal.
In recent times, this Austria team has frustrated many a team, conceding just two goals in three games against the Turks, Germans and Serbs. Not bad.
They also kept things very tight when facing France in the Nations League back in late 2022, and with much the same team, they can be fancied to, at the very least, make life tough here, which for me, makes a relatively low-scoring game a little more likely than then early odds suggest.
After all, each of the 2022 renewals of this fixture contained a maximum of two goals, while the pair have either scored just once, conceded just once, failed to score or kept a clean sheet in eight of their last ten combined.
