Kicking off things on Monday will be the intriguing tie between Romania and Ukraine, which on paper at least, is one of less clear-cut games of the opening few days. Read on for our Romania vs Ukraine predictions.

Romania vs Ukraine prediction

For the Romania vs Ukraine match prediction, we believe the final score will be 2-1 in favour of Ukraine based on our analysis.

With Belgium hotly fancied by most to win this group, this opening game will almost certainly be viewed as one to win by both teams, and in truth, there’s no reason for either team not to fancy themselves here, so we could see an attacking game, though it is the Ukrainians who have a little bit more about them in terms of sheer quality, which could see them edge it.

Our Romania vs Ukraine predictions are displayed below, with analysis to follow later in the article:

Romania vs Ukraine head-to-head statistics

This will be the first time that the pair have clashed since 2016, when they played out a seven-goal thriller in Turin, with Ukraine winning by four goals to three.

Of the five previous renewals of this fixture, four have contained at least five goals. Two of those four have gone the way of the Romanians, with the Ukrainians also winning two.

Romania vs Ukraine preview

This match will commence on Monday 17/06/2024 at Allianz Arena in Munich. Kick off will be at 14:00 GMT.

With the legendary Gheorge Hagi pulling their strings, Romania enjoyed a golden period during the mid 1990’s and very early 2000’s, reaching the quarter-finals at both the 1994 World Cup and Euro 2000, but they’ve since failed to get competitive at major tournaments.

Will the men in yellow make much headway in Germany this summer? Probably not, but they may well have their say in this Group E opener.

After all, they arrive at Euro 2024 having lost just once since late 2022, which is a decent record, even if they have been short of matches against top teams.

If we look at their personnel, Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin is probably the most immediately noticeable, but the likes of forwards Ianis Hagi and George Puscas have plied their trade at the top level for various clubs, such as Alaves in LaLiga and Genoa (Serie A), so they carry a threat.

For the Ukrainians, this may just be their golden era. If we look at their squad, then there are lots and lots of players who not only play at the top level domestically, but play for some of the best clubs on the planet.

Premier League fans know all about Mudryk, Mykolenko and Zinchenko, while keeper Lunin has 30 appearances for Real Madrid since 2022, Yarmolenko has also delivered the goods in the Premier League (and at previous international tournaments), while Dovbyk and Tsygankov come off the back of fantastic campaigns for a Girona side that finished third in LaLiga.

Having held their own against some decent opposition in recent times, drawing with Italy and Germany (twice), drawing with England, all since 2023, they won’t be going down without a fight in Germany.

Romania vs Ukraine Betting tips

Far from the easiest fixture to get a handle on, but I’ve settled on one bet ahead of Romania vs Ukraine, which at the available odds (at the time of writing) stands out as offering a smidgen of value.

Over 2.5 Goals

This will clearly be seen as a huge game by both teams. They share this group with Belgium, who look like near-certain winners of their opening game against the Slovaks.

Of course, strange things happen in football, and not all that rarely either, so that game is far from a foregone conclusion, but let’s assume that the Red Devils get the job done, a win for either Romania or Ukraine here would leave them in a very healthy position.

As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see goth teams have something of a go here. It is the Ukrainians, who really do have a nice-looking squad, who are more likely to force the issue, and they’re likely good enough to do so, but that should allow the Romanians, who are not completely devoid of offensive quality, to hit on the break.

From the head-to-head record above, we can see that the pair have a history of sharing high-scoring encounters, so while that doesn’t have much bearing on this fixture, it would be far from the first time that goals have been scored between Romania and Ukraine.

Four of Ukraine’s last five fixtures have contained at least three goals, while they have both a strong scoring record outside of their home nation, as well as a rather weak defensive record, with both teams scoring in six of their last eight away games (excluding a friendly against Polish club side Lechia).

In seven of those eight games, at least three goals were scored. If we count only away games against teams that will feature at Euro 2024, then three or more goals have been scored in three of their last four on the road.

Recap - Romania vs Ukraine betting tips

To confirm, the recommended bet ahead of this fixture is as follows:

Over 2.5 Goals @ 6/5 with bet365
