Euro 2024 hosts Germany are back in action on Wednesday afternoon. Following their excellent opening-night win, they’ll be looking to go two from two against a Hungary side desperate for a point to keep their dreams of qualifying alive. Read on for our Germany vs Hungary predictions.
Germany vs Hungary prediction
For the Germany vs Hungary match prediction, we believe the final score will be 3-1 in favour of Germany based on our analysis.
The Germans were quick out of the traps on the opening night and they certainly showed that they mean business, so much so that they’re easy to fancy against a Hungarian side that did create (a bit) but ultimately lacked defensive solidity against the Swiss.
Our predictions for this match are as follows, complete with analysis below:
Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score @ 7/5 with bet365

Germany vs Hungary head-to-head statistics
This will be the third time that the pair have met since 2021, when the pair drew 2-2 on German soil. Following that four-goal stalemate, they drew 1-1 in Hungary, before the Hungarians pulled off a shock (0-1) win in Germany back in 2022.
The pair have previously met on 10 occasions, most famously at the 1954 World Cup, where a Hungarian side containing Ferenc Puskas beat the Germans 8-3 in the groups, only to lose in the final (3-2) against the same team.
Germany vs Hungary preview
This game is set to be played on 19/06/2024 at MHPArena (Stuttgart). Kick off will be at 17:00 GMT.
We all knew that the Germans would be dangerous in their own backyard and they certainly laid down a marker on the opening night.
They were massively helped by a nervous and frankly out-of-their-depth Scotland side, but still, Julian Nagelsmann’s men impressed with their front-foot, aggressive style, creating lots of chances, scoring five goals.
With that under their belt, the tournament hosts will fancy themselves to get the better of a Hungarian side that looked a little too open against the Swiss.
I’ll be the first to admit that I expected a little more from Hungary in that opening game. Sure, they showed offensive quality through Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai, while both Rolland Sallai and Barnabás Varga made nuisances of themselves too, the former scoring a well-taken header.
However, defensively they were much less secure than many (including myself) expected them to be, which is a big worry ahead of this game against a free-scoring German side.
We know that the Magyars carry a threat on the break and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did a much better job of countering Die Mannschaft than the Scots did, but have they got the defensive nous to get a result here? I seriously doubt it.
Germany vs Hungary Betting tips
From a betting point of view, this game doesn’t leave too much room for movement. After all, the hosts are well fancied in the betting, and rightly so, so there’s little value to be had there.
After much deliberation, I’ve settled on just the one play, which at 7/5 with bet365 may just contain a speck of value.
Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score
We all saw how threatening this German team can be, while we also saw that they’re far from short of quality offensive options on the bench, with Niclas Füllkrug, Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller all coming off the bench to good effect.
With this in mind, it’s virtually impossible to see the Hungarians keeping it tight here, even if they did that in Friendly action back in 2022.
The Magyars were alarmingly too open against the Swiss, especially since they adopted far from an overly cavalier approach. It’s not that they simply threw caution to the wind early doors and got caught out.
I really wouldn’t be surprised if the underdogs in this game had a say offensively, though, and not just because Scotland scored.
The Scots undeservedly scored in that opening game through a stroke of luck and nothing more.
While the Tartan Army offered virtually nothing on the break, with Liverpool’s Szoboszlai and Freiburg’s Sallai, both of whom are capable with the ball in transition, both of whom also have lots of experience playing in Germany, Hungary can do much better in that sense.
After all, this is a Hungary team that hasn’t failed to score since June 2023, while they’ve scored in all of their big games since then, netting home and away against Serbia, against Turkey and against Switzerland during the first round of games, in all of which they conceded and all of which contained at least three goals.
