In Group F on Wednesday evening, Georgia and Portugal will clash in Gelsenkirchen, where both teams have very different tasks.

For the Portuguese, the job is virtually done, with just a point needed to guarantee themselves as group winners, but the Georgians know that they almost certainly need what must be described as an unlikely win. Read on for our Georgia vs Portugal predictions.

Georgia vs Portugal prediction

For the Georgia vs Portugal match prediction, we believe the final score will be a 2-0 win for Portugal based on our analysis.

Try as they might, the Georgians lacked the end-product to get anything against Turkey on match-day one, while the same lack of offensive power meant they could only draw against the Czech’s so expect them to come up short against the best team in the group.

Georgia vs Portugal head-to-head statistics

This will be just the second meeting between the two teams and the first at a major tournament. The only previous renewal of this fixture came back in 2008, when Portugal won by two goals to nil.

Georgia vs Portugal preview

This match will be played on 26/06/2024 at Veltins Arena (Gelsenkirchen). Kick off will be at 20:00 GMT.

On match-day one, despite losing to the Turks, the Georgians showed a wider footballing audience that they certainly didn’t go to Germany to make up the numbers.

Yes, they lacked quality in areas, but they fought hard, tried to get forward as opposed to simply looking to soak up pressure, which they could easily have been forgiven for as the underdogs.

Unfortunately, having lost to Turkey, Willy Sagnol’s men needed to beat the Czech’s on match-day two, not because a draw puts them out, but because winning this final game against the Portuguese seems highly unlikely.

Despite leading in that game through very useful forward Georges Mikautadze, who is likely to earn himself a move away from relegated Ligue 1 side Metz in the near future, they couldn’t pick up maximum points.

Can the Georgians now do the unthinkable and beat a strong Portugal team to book their place in the knockouts at their first ever tournament? Almost certainly not, but if the first two games are anything to go by, they’ll likely give it a good go.

Having come from behind late in the day against the Czech’s winning thanks to a stoppage-time stab from Francisco Conceciao, Roberto Martinez’s men had an easier time of it on match-day two.

It didn’t take long for the 2016 winners of this competition to go ahead, while they doubled their lead before half-time, albeit in hugely fortuitous circumstances as the Turks rather stung themselves, scoring a sloppy own goal.

In the second half, captain Cristiano Ronaldo showed his unselfish side to lay the ball on a plate for Bruno Fernandes, who put the result beyond any doubt.

So far so good from the Portuguese, who’ve undoubtedly got further gears to find, so it will be interesting to see what they can deliver when tested further once the group stages are done and dusted.

Georgia vs Portugal Betting tips

With all Portugal-favouring bets far too short for my liking, I’m siding with a couple of player bets that focus on the Georgians, both of which look a little sizable at the early odds.

Georges Mikautadze Over 0.5 Shots on Target

I’ve backed Mikautadze to score (at nice odds too) ahead of each of Georgia’s first two games and he’s duly delivered the goods.

I’m not going to take the forward to find the net here, but at chunky odds of 9/4, I am going to side with him to register at least one shot on target.

Mikautadze has proven himself to be a lively forward, while he’s got the end-product when it matters most, make no mistake about that.

Of course, the Georgians have struggled to get him on the ball at times, which is likely part of why he’s 9/4 to shoot on target here, but still, given his quality, such a price is generous.

The Portuguese need just a point to win the group and they’ll likely get that without having to work too hard, while Mikautadze should appreciate playing on the break against a team that won’t sit back.

For long spells, the Metz man will be without the ball, but in Chakvetadze and Kvaratskelia, Georgia do have some useful ball carriers, players who can get the ball up the pitch, players who can provide, so I’m betting that he gets at least one chance and if he does, don’t be surprised to see him hit the target. I won’t be.

After all, this is a player who averaged 1.24 shots on target for an underdog Metz team in Ligue 1 last season, so he’s no stranger to delivering the good in games of this nature.

Guram Kashia to be Booked

Another bet that looks a little generously priced at the early odds is ‘Guram Kashia to be Booked’.

Georgia’s combative captain picked up a card against the Czech Republic last time out and as his side are likely to be on the back foot against some very tricky players here, he looks a good bet to repeat that.

After all, this is a player who was booked three times during qualifying, while he now has two yellows in his last five games for club and country.

The 36-year-old is going to be facing a crop of players with far more speed and agility than he can offer, and while he has lots of experience and has done a superb job of leading his nation, he screams yellow card here and I'm just not sure the early odds reflect that enough.

Recap - Georgia vs Portugal betting tips

To recap, our best bets ahead of this final Group F game are as follows:

Georges Mikautadze Over 0.5 Shots on Target @ 9/4 with bet365

Guram Kashia to be Booked @ 4/1 with bet365
