The wait is close to being over. From Friday night, fans up and down the country will begin make their way to second-tier stadiums as the 2024/25 Championship season begins.
With five days to go (at the time of writing), there’s still time to get your Championship bets on. In this article, we’re looking at player-specific pre-season bets, focusing specifically on one of more exciting markets. That’s right, it’s top scorer time. Here goes.
Top scorer tips for 2024/25 Championship season
The Championship will be home to a whole host of marksmen this season, so much so that there are no shortage of options.
We’re looking at something of a mixture of strikers with serious Championship pedigree, potentially exciting newcomers arriving off the back of promising seasons abroad and young talents that look ready to take the league by storm.
As is always the case, I’m very much trying to snuff out some value, which appears to be in short supply at the head of the market.
One appealing player who does currently have his name relatively high on the betting list is Emmanuel Latte Lath.
The Middlesbrough forward really caught the eye last season, so much that he looks a tasty bet at odds of 14/1. Latte Lath made swapping the Swiss Super League for the Championship look like light work last term, scoring 16 goals in his maiden campaign in English football.
I also like a player who is currently available at much bigger odds. More on both below, but let’s first glance at the Championship top-scorer odds ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Two players to give us a run for our money
At the odds available (at the time of writing), I’ve narrowed it down to two players who both look more than capable of delivering the goods offensively, at least to give us something of a decent run for our money.
Emmanuel Latte Lath
For his first season in English football, Emmanuel Latte Lath did superbly last time around, looking every inch a player who is just perfect for the rough and tumble of England’s second division.
Strong, direct and far from scared to mix it physically, Latte Lath proved to be very tricky to defend against during the 2023/24 season, scoring 16 goals in just 30 appearances, notching an eye-catching average of 0.69 goals per 90 minutes.
After that inaugural Championship season, for my money, for a Middlesbrough side that finished the campaign as the second best non-promoted team in terms of expected goals created, the Ivorian should be the favourite in the top scorer market.
I absolutely mean that too. Last term, Latte Lath showed all the qualities necessary to be a Championship goal machine, and given that he’s playing for a strong team that has no shortage of creative players to call upon, the central striker should be taken very, very seriously.
On top of an average of 0.69 goals per 90 minutes, the 25-year-old averaged 0.50 xG per 90 minutes last term, as well as 3.14 shots and 1.76 shots. Don’t be surprised if those averages get even better this time around. I won’t be, and I’ll be on him to outscore all other Championship players at 14/1.
Brandon Thomas-Asante
At much larger odds, Coventry’s new signing Brandon Thomas-Asante looks like a decent bet too.
Admittedly, I’m far less sweet on Thomas-Asante than I am Latte Lath, but as he comes off the back of his best season at this level, scoring 11 goals for West Brom, the Ghanaian forward could make a big impact for the Sky Blues.
The 25-year-old has had to cut his teeth in English football the hard way, having spells in League One, League Two and even the National League, before becoming a main player for the Baggies last season.
A total of 11 goals for a team that didn’t make the play-offs is a decent return, while an average of 0.42 xG per 90 minutes is particularly good.
What I like is that Brandon Thomas-Asante is joining a forward-thinking Coventry side that created the sixth most expected goals in the league last season. Combining with the likes of Haji Wright, Kasey Palmer and Ephron Mason-Clark, Thomas-Asante could very easily improve on last year’s tally.
Whether he does or doesn’t, there’s enough to like about him and his new team to make odds of 40/1 look ever so slightly generous.
