On Sunday afternoon, two of the teams looking to break into the top four this season will clash at St. James’ Park, where Newcastle host Tottenham.
Can the Magpies improve after a rather timid effort on the south coast last weekend? Or will the visitors continue to shift through the gears following that thumping win against Everton? Read on for our Newcastle vs Tottenham predictions.

For the Newcastle vs Tottenham match prediction, we believe the final score will be a 2-2 based on our analysis.
Both teams have lots of quality in the final third, while when push came to shove last season, neither looked great at the back, so we could see goals all round.

Newcastle vs Tottenham head-to-head statistics
When the pair last met, at St. James’ Park in April, Spurs were humbled by the Magpies, who won by four goals to nil. Prior to that, Tottenham won by four goals to one at home.
Interestingly, each of the last seven renewals of this fixture have contained at least three goals, with four or more goals being scored in six of those seven.
Newcastle vs Tottenham preview
This match will be played on 01/09/2024 at St James’ Park. Kick off will be at 13:30 GMT.
It’s been a bit of a quiet start to the new season from a Newcastle side that will absolutely have their sights set on finishing in the top four.
Sure, they got the job done against a newly promoted Southampton team on the opening weekend, scraping a 1-0 win, despite going down to ten men early doors. After that red card, it was always going to be about grinding it out and that’s exactly what they did.
However, Eddie Howe’s men couldn’t build on that effort last weekend, as they drew 1-1 away at Bournemouth, with VAR sparing their blushes late in the day, controversially disallowing a Cherries goal.
Let’s be honest, it wasn’t a handball and the goal should’ve stood. If you can’t see that, you’re as bad as those plonkers ironically in charge of utilising the technology available to ensure no mistakes are made. Anyway, the Magpies were lucky there and will now need to do better.
For Tottenham, the opening weekend wasn’t a great one. They battered Leicester for 60 minutes, but could only score once, despite having numerous chances, before Jamie Vardy made them pay.
Ange Postecoglou’s men did not make the same mistake twice, though, trouncing Everton in front of a home crowd last week. This is a tougher test, make no mistake about that, but if they turn up at St. James’ Park in the same mood, then Spurs should make life very tough for the hosts.
Newcastle vs Tottenham Betting tips
Ahead of what is an intriguing fixture, one that is certainly tough to call, I’m going down the player-bet road, arriving at three bets. Let’s get stuck in.
James Maddison to Score
We’ll start with Maddison. Perhaps known more as a creator since joining Spurs, Maddison has a habit of popping up with goals, and usually eye-catching ones.
He’s yet to score this season, but he’s looked hungry in the first two games and it likely won’t be long before the England man is back on the scoresheet.
Given his average of 0.27 xG per 90 minutes last season, coupled with the fact that he’s averaging 2.31 shots per game already this term, I like Tottenham’s number 10 to score here at odds of 10/3.
Brennan Johnson Over 0.5 Assists
Criticised for a lack of end-product by many last season, including myself, in the end, Brennan Johnson had what deserves to be described as a decent first season at Spurs.
The winger scored five times, but it was his ability to create for others that allowed him to cement himself as a regular starter. The Welsh international registered ten assists, averaging a chunky 0.43 per 90 minutes.
Yet to provide for a colleague this term, Johnson has made a lively start, playing 80 minutes against Leicester, before completing the full 90 against Everton last weekend.
In both of those games, the 23-year-old has got into promising crossing positions, while his pace will likely be key on the break here, so don’t be surprised if he gets off the mark for assists on Sunday afternoon.
All things considered, odds of 4/1 look rather generous. I’ll be having some of that, absolutely.
Joelinton Over 0.5 Shots on Target
Last but not least, Newcastle’s Joelinton looks a little on the large side in the ‘Shots on Target market.
The midfielder/forward is an integral part of Howe’s Newcastle set-up and he’s made a promising start to the season in an offensive sense, taking three shots in two games, hitting the target twice.
Since he joined Newcastle, the Brazilian has averaged 1.62 shots per game in the Premier League, registering an average of 0.66 shots on target. If we take 0.66 as odds, we get 1.52 (66% implied probability), which makes odds of 6/4 (40% implied probability) look chunky.
For my money, we’ve got a sizable edge by betting on Joelinton to register a shot on target at odds of 6/4, so that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.
