Sheffield United vs Watford head-to-head statistics
This will be the first time that the pair have faced off since early 2023, when Sheffield United won by a goal to nil at this venue. Earlier that same season, Watford won by a goal to nil. Interestingly, none of the four recent renewals of this fixture have been won by the visiting team, with each side winning once at home, drawing the other two.
Sheffield United vs Watford preview
This match will be played on 01/09/2024 at Bramall Lane. Kick off will be at 20:00 GMT.
Given that they’re very much looking to make the swiftest possible return to the Premier League, Sheffield United haven’t made the most fluent start to the campaign.
Yes, they won on the opening weekend, beating Preston in relatively comfortable fashion, but they’ve not tasted success in the league since, drawing with QPR at home, despite being two goals to the good.
Last weekend, they were halted by Norwich too, drawing 1-1 away from home, before losing to Barnsley in the EFL Cup on Tuesday evening.
This home game will now be seen as an opportunity by Chris Wilder to get back on track, though beating Watford will not be easy.
Another of the teams to have played Premier League football in recent times, the Hornets have made a superb start to the campaign. They beat Millwall in dramatic late fashion on day one, before building on the effort at home, battering Stoke by three goals to nil.
Last weekend, things continued to go well for the men managed by Tom Cleverley, who came from behind to beat Derby, while their 100% record continued with a 2-0 EFL Cup win over Plymouth in the week.
Sheffield United vs Watford Betting tips
There are three bets that appeal looking at the early odds, these are:
Watford 0 Asian Handicap
Given the start that they’ve made, I’m finding it hard to see why the visitors should be so unfancied by the early market. To my eyes, with the insurance of a ‘0 Handicap’, which provides a refund in the event of a draw, they look like a great bet.
Not only have the Hornets picked up positive results, but they’ve turned in some strong performances, especially in an attacking sense.
They’ve seemingly got a mix of pace, power and creativity in the final third, while they’ll likely be a big threat on the break at Bramall Lane, so don’t be surprised if they get a result here. I won’t be.
Vakoun Bayo to Score
For the visitors, after his first goal of the season last week, I’ve got a feeling that the floodgates may open for Vakoun Bayo, who looks to have the makings of a very decent Championship forward. Unfortunately, he won't become that in the future as he's agreed to join Udinese, but will remain at Watford for the remainder of the season on loan.
Bayo took a while to really get going last season, but he ended the campaign with nine goals and assists and if the early evidence is anything to go by this season, he’s definitely fancied to make a big impact by manager Cleverley, who has started him in all three league games so far.
He repaid his trio of starting places with a superb goal against Derby last weekend and as he’s averaging an eye-catching 0.57 xG per 90 minutes, I’m betting on him to notch here at odds of 11/4.
Edo Kayembe Over 0.5 Shots on Target
I’m also going to bet on Watford’s Edo Kayembe to register a shot on target, as the midfielder has made a positive start to the season in that sense.
The scorer of three goals in three games, Kayembe has made his offensive intentions clear, showing that he’s going to get forward and contribute in the final third.
If the Blades push for a win here, Kayembe will likely enjoy the open nature of the game, while it’s not like he hasn’t shot with regularity over the first three games.
As he averages 2.14 shots and 1.07 shots on target per 90 minutes, even-money is an easy price to take, that’s for sure.
