Yesterday’s bet was something of a no-show, but such is the game of horse racing. We move on to Monday, with meetings at Hamilton, Wolverhampton and Sedgefield to get stuck into.
Our port of call on what looks to be a wet and gloomy Monday for much of the country is Wolverhampton, where there’s an interesting runner in the 18:30 contest. Read on for our free horse racing tips.

18:30 Wolverhampton - Next Second (each-way)
At Wolverhampton this evening, ahead of the contest taking place at 18:30, a Class 6 handicap over an ever so slightly extended five furlongs, Next Second catches the eye in the early betting.
The mount of Josephine Gordon may not have gone all that close over course and distance last time out, while she certainly wasn’t involved in the finish at Chelmsford prior to that, but I really wouldn’t rush to dismiss her on that basis.
This is a horse who absolutely knows how to go well at Wolverhampton, while she has now slipped back down to her last winning mark of 46. Where was that last win? It came over C&D back in July, when she scored in a race that was far from dissimilar to this.
Four times a winner over C&D, the mare has three wins from three runs to her name when running over Wolverhampton’s five furlongs from a mark of 46. That’s not a stat that can be ignored as far as I’m concerned, especially with odds of 10/1 floating around.
We know she likes it here, we know she’s well handicapped and we know that another big performance (in a race such as this) is probably not far away.
The booking of Josephine Gordon, who has won on this horse before, could be a shrewd one too. Ruth Carr isn’t a trainer that constantly turns to Gordon, but the pair do have an eye-catching strike rate of 33% in the last year. The pair also have a win/place strike rate of 66% in the last year, as well as an all-time win/place strike rate of 22%.
There’s plenty of early pace on in this race, with several who like to go forward and challenge for the lead, which should mean that the mare gets the race run to suit, as she looks to come with a late run as the pace collapses in the closing stages.
All in all, this is every inch a runner that ticks more than enough boxes for each-way odds of 10/1 to be marked as generous. Such odds should definitely be taken by those seeking value for money.
