It wasn’t to be for Shalaa Asker, who ran well at Southwell, making decent headway before being squeezed for room at a crucial point. More luck and he likely comes with a decent run and gets close, but that’s racing.
A new week begins today. It’s a bit of a quiet Monday, with the action at Newton Abbot and Windsor already called off due to poor conditions, leaving us with just two meetings at Hamilton and Wolverhampton.

20:30 Wolverhampton - Bungle Bay (each-way)
On a day where there’s far from an abundance of races to choose from, I’m interested in the final race of the evening at Wolverhampton, which takes place at 20:30.
Ahead of this Class 6 handicap, Bungle Bay may just be a little generously priced, so much so that an each-way bet is warranted at odds of 12/1.
High on the list for speed ratings, which on the all-weather is typically a positive, the gelding will arrive at the Midlands track having not run for 63 days, but when we last saw him, at this venue back in late July, he performed as if this step up to an extended mile would suit.
In that previous race, he kept on late in the day over seven furlongs, hinting that a greater test of stamina would suit him down to the ground. To be honest, given many of his efforts of seven furlongs, I’m surprised he hasn’t raced over a mile more, though his lack of racing at this distance could be why he’s as nicely priced as he is, so I won’t complain.
A seven-furlong winner at Wolves from only 2 lbs lower in the weights, I’m really not sure that a mark of 54 is the ceiling for this horse, especially as he has untapped potential over this longer trip.
The way the race could be run, with a decent amount of early pace prompting a potential pace collapse at the death, should suit the five-year-old, who has four wins and three places from 13 runs at Wolves, where he’s either got his nose in front or placed in three of his last four.
Joe Leavy also has a rather encouraging strike rate when riding for this trainer, with the pair combining to win 23.08% of the time in the last year. They have a win/place strike rate of 53.84%, which is impossible to ignore given the odds available. Take the early value, that’s my advice.
