There’s enough juice in a price of 9/1 to get me more than just a little bit interested in Emporess ahead of the 15:50 at Bath this afternoon.
Lightly raced and far from fully exposed, Rod Millman’s filly showed plenty of promise when finishing fourth at this venue last time out, running on well at the death, suggesting that she'll enjoy this step up to an extended five furlongs. If she can build on that effort, which is far from out of the question, then she ought to do well in what is a slightly lesser contest.
Not only did she keep on well for fourth last time out, but she also ran well in a novice race over this course and distance back in May, again keeping on for third, finishing behind a pair that have both gone on to win much better races than this. That sort of form shouldn’t be readily ignored.
Of course, she’ll need to relish this softer ground, but she didn’t run too badly when encountering soft ground on debut, getting close to a couple of horses that have since gone on to perform at a level higher than this.
All things considered, the unexposed filly ticks a few too many boxes for odds of 9/1 to not be considered generous. For a trainer who is certainly no stranger to tasting success at Bath, with four places on offer, such odds are well worth taking.
