16:20 Sedgefield - Dripsey Moon to Win
At first glance, the 16:20 race at Sedgefield, a handicap chase over a stamina-sapping trip of three miles and five furlongs, seems like a trappy little affair, and there are certainly a few in with a chance, but for my money, the one that ticks the most boxes, and certainly more boxes than the early odds suggest, is Dripsey Moon.
The mount of Brian Hughes has barely put a foot wrong of late, featuring in the top two in each of his five races since reappearing in June, winning two of those five.
He scored well in a decent Class 3 race over a mile less at Perth, before running a big race at that venue last time out. On that evidence, today’s step back up in distance should hold no fears.
After all this horse ran a cracker to go down by just a head over three miles and two furlongs at Newton Abbot back in July, running as if he’d handle further no problem. He easily beat one of those in this field on that day, which is a positive.
Donald McCain often targets Sedgefield races and it’s certainly fair to say that he does well at the Durham venue.
Tommy Beau won this race last year, but he’s now racing off a career high mark and must give weight away all round, which won’t be tough to do.
For my money, Donald McCain’s runner has plenty in favour here, so much so that he should be the favourite. While he’s not, he’s worthy of supporting at odds offering a slither of value.
