20:00 Wolverhampton - Altanera to Win
There’s plenty to choose from on Monday, but I’m keeping my powder dry until the evening meeting at Wolverhampton.
Ahead of the penultimate race on the card, a Class 6 handicap over a mile and six furlongs, I’m interested in Altanera, who for David Simcock may now have more to give up in trip.
Let’s be real, the filly has so far shown little in the way of promise, and I wouldn’t attempt to say otherwise.
Last time out, over one mile and two furlongs at Southwell, though, the mount of Joey Haynes did show a little more, which suggests that she may be getting the hang of things, while she certainly shaped as if a greater test of stamina would be up her street.
To be honest, the way in which she kept to his task late in the day last time out tells me that this sort of distance should definitely suit, while the fact that the three-year-old now tackles weaker rivals is not to be ignored either.
Having raced against horses rated in the mid-to-high 60’s last time out, she now goes against animals rated between mid 40’s and mid 50’s. This is a marked drop in grade.
I also want to touch on the fact that David Simcock is a trainer who often does well around this time of year, saddling more winners last year in October than any other month. He’s also no stranger to success at this venue, training more winners at Wolverhampton than anywhere else in 2024 so far.
Ultimately, this is a weak contest and if this one can take even the slightest step forward following his most encouraging effort yet, then don’t be surprised if she goes close. At odds of 4/1, I’m betting that the filly can lay down a serious challenge.
