Altanera did the job well yesterday, landing us a third winner from the last six horse bets. We’re back at it on Tuesday, and there’s plenty for us to get stuck into, with meetings at four venues in the UK and Ireland.

The fourth race on the card at Newcastle this evening is a Class 3 affair, run over the minimum trip of five furlongs. It’s a decent field and there are certainly a handful with seemingly decent claims.
However, for my money, with odds of 8/1 available, Badri, who drops in grade, stands out as a value each-way bet, especially with four places on offer.
No stranger to running well at Newcastle, the seven-year-old is becoming increasingly well handicapped, so much so that his next visit to the winner’s enclosure may not be far away.
He’s back down at Class 3 level tonight, which cannot be ignored. His latest Class 3 effort was a good one, while his most recent Class 3 effort was also very encouraging. Being short of room arguably cost him a serious challenge that day, and he’s now 6 lbs lower in the weights, so don’t be surprised if he goes close.
Winning three of his last five Class 3 races, this is a horse who really can make his presence felt at this level. More appealing still is the fact that two of those three wins came over course and distance. He’s now lower in the handicap than he was for both of those successes too.
With P J McDonald in the saddle tonight, it’s also worth mentioning that trainer Michael Herrington, who saddles plenty of winners at Newcastle, has a very tidy career record when combining with this jockey. The pair have a chunky 35% win/place strike rate together. I like that.
To be honest, given both his current mark and his overall profile, odds of 8/1 simply look too big. It will be disappointing if he doesn’t get heavily involved in the finish, put it that way.
