As is typically the case, Saturday is a busy day in the world of British horse racing, with meetings at various venues up and down the country, including the second day of the opener at Cheltenham.
From a betting point of view, at Sporting Post, we’re off to Newbury and Doncaster, where ahead of the races 14:34 and 15:15, there’s a couple of horses that appeal from an each-way point of view. Read on for our free horse racing tips.

Horse | Track | Time | Odds | Fair Odds | Value |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Arthur’s Realm | Newbury | 14:34 | 8/1 (Betfred) | 11/2 | +4.3% |
Terwada | Doncaster | 15:15 | 16/1 (betway) | 12/1 | +1.8% |
14:34 Newbury - Arthur’s Realm (each-way)
A competitive race, make no mistake about that, and there are certainly several in here with chances, though having scratched beneath the surface, I cannot help but feel that Arthur’s Realm is the one that isn’t quite getting the respect he deserves by the early market.
For starters, there was very little wrong with his effort over a mile at Haydock last time out. On that occasion, he enjoyed the heavy going, and not for the first time, while he performed as if this step back up to a mile and two furlongs would suit him down to the ground.
On paper, this race looks a little less demanding than his most recent assignment, plus he’s back down to what looks like a workable handicap rating, sitting just 1 lb above the mark that saw him win over this trip (in a better race) at Redcar back in May.
Placed on his only previous visit to Newbury, Ed Dunlop’s runner has delivered some encouraging previous efforts on heavy ground, so there should be no issue there, while the likely pace angle of this race ought to suit too.
With his trainer having hit decent form with his horses of late, taking everything into consideration, as the table above suggests, odds of 8/1 look a little generous, especially with this contest rating as a little less demanding than his previous race.
15:15 Doncaster - Terwada (each-way)
If the race above is competitive, then this is hugely competitive, and as is always the case with big-field handicaps, it’s a bit of a dart-throwing job. That said, Ed Walker’s Terwada catches the eye at odds of 16/1.
For my money, the yet-to-be-fully-exposed four-year-old has done enough to be a bit shorter in the market. After all, he ran an excellent race to go close at Yarmouth on his first start over this distance, while it looks as if he’s been kept under wraps for a decent handicap such as this.
Sure, he’s gone up 5 lbs in the weights for that encouraging effort last time out, though I’d argue that a mark of 94 could still be a little lenient. After all, he ran very well in an ultra competitive handicap at York from a mark of 96 last season, so don’t be surprised if he gets heavily involved from today’s rating.
Ed Walker is a trainer who has had his string in fantastic shape of late, while the booking of Saffie Osborne in the saddle is not to be ignored either. Walker often turns to Osborne when he fancies one, and it’s fair to say that the pair have a very encouraging record when teaming up.
Ranking highly in terms of speed ratings, given his untapped potential at this trip and after he stayed on really well on testing ground last time out, I can’t leave him alone when odds of 16/1 are on offer, especially with five places up for grabs.
