The opener at Wincanton is an interesting contest and it’s by no means a one-horse race, absolutely not. Therapist should be respected for Nicky Henderson, as should the hat-trick seeking Reach For The Moon.
However, all things considered, I have to conclude that Liverpool Knight is worthy of more respect than he’s getting from the early market.
Previously with the highly in-form Olly Murphy stable, this doesn’t exactly look like an unrealistic assignment for the gelding, who is now making his debut for Fergal O’Brien, who is no stranger to saddling a winner at Wincanton.
He’ll return to the track for the first time in 93 days, which shouldn’t be seen as a negative as he’s won off the back of similar breaks, while he’s had much less time off than some of these, which is another positive.
On pure form, he’s the one to beat too, with his close-up third (of 15) in a competitive Class 4 hurdle at Uttoxeter last time out rating as very strong form in relation to this contest. Both the second and the fourth from that race have since won, while the winner was last seen in a better race than this.
He’s also a previous Class 2 winner and is now just 1 lb above his last winning mark. If we factor in the rather handy 6 lb claim, which leaves him looking nicely weighted against a good few of these, then we could say that he’s well handicapped, running from what is effectively 5 lbs below his last winning mark. This should not be overlooked.
Effective on today’s ground, the six-year-old has a profile that is strong enough to warrant relatively sturdy favouritism here, so while he’s not the market leader and while odds of 4/1 are available, he’s worth betting on to get the job done.
