After that pleasing winner early last week, we’ve hit a bit of a brick wall with the racing tips, with each of the last four runners failing to land a blow. It’s a tough old game at times.
A new week brings renewed hope. On Monday, there are several meetings for bettors to enjoy, with racing at Ayr, Leicester, Redcar, Newcastle and Southwell, plus two meetings in Ireland, so there’s definitely plenty to choose from. 19:00 Southwell - Recon Mission to Win
At Southwell on Monday evening, I’m interested in the race taking place at 19:00, in which there’s an eye-catching runner.
The horse in question is Recon Mission, who hasn’t done much of late, failing to win since July 2022, though that long losing run has allowed the Tony Carroll runner to drop to what appears to be an alarmingly lenient handicap mark.
The gelding now sits 14 lbs below his last winning mark, and having recently gone well over this distance at Lingfield, the mount of Jack Doughty looks ready to return to the winner’s enclosure.
I’m not too bothered about his lacklustre effort at Brighton last time out. That’s a quirky venue, so for my money, a performance there is of little relevance ahead of a Southwell race.
What is of relevance is the fact that he finished a very close-up second from this mark, over this trip, on the Lingfield all-weather track back in late August. The winner of that contest has since gone on to win again, while the horse that he beat into third has since delivered two pleasing placed efforts on the artificial surface.
This is far from the deepest field, and he ranks very highly in terms of speed ratings, which is a plus, while if we factor in Jack Doughty’s 5 lb claim, then it’s fair to say that the gelding looks very well weighted in a race of this nature.
Throw into the mix that Tony Carroll has had his string in decent form of late and odds of 13/2 look on the large side. I see this as a bigger opportunity to strike than the early market does, so there’s value to be had for those who seek it.
