The lucky last at Newcastle on Tuesday evening is an interesting contest, and there are few in here that the early market is struggling to split, though it does show a clear preference for Tickets, who won last time out.
For my money, carrying top weight, from his new rating, that horse is far from guaranteed to follow up and is far too short in my book, which allows Al Shabab to be available at what I would describe as a generous price.
The mount of Rob Hornby arrives off the back of a very good second over this trip at Wolverhampton last time out, running on well from off the pace in a race that contained a little more depth than this. With that under his belt, he could very easily take this prize.
It’s fair to say that the gelding doesn’t offer too much else in terms of form this season, but he was racing in better events than this on turf, that’s for sure.
His only other all-weather run came back in October 2023, when over seven furlongs, he finished second (of 13) at Chelmsford. The form of that has since worked out well, with the winner going on to rate far above this sort of race.
With the in-form Rob Hornby doing the steering, in first-time cheekpieces, and in a race that is far from more demanding than his last assignment, this lightly-raced three-year-old looks well placed here. For my money, he should be the favourite, so while he’s not, and while odds of 4/1 are on offer, he’s worthy of support.
