After Tuesday and Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League, comes the less high-profile business of the Europa League. Sneered at by many, Europe’s secondary continental competition often provides some excellent betting opportunities.
Excellent betting opportunities are just what we’re looking for ahead of Thursday's action, so let’s get stuck in and see what we can find. Read on for our Europa League predictions and best bets.
Europa League predictions and best bets
Each of the games mentioned below take place on 28/11/2024, kicking off at either 17:45 or 20:00 GMT.
Let’s not waste time, let’s dive straight in and talk about the bets that appeal most ahead of the next round of UEFA Europa League fixtures.
Alkmaar vs Galatasaray - Alkmaar to Score Over 1.5 Goals
First up on Thursday evening, I’m looking at the game between AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray, and in the early market, the hosts look a very decent bet to notch at least a couple of goals.
Seen as something of an underdog in the betting, Alkmaar perhaps aren't getting the respect that they deserve, at least not in an offensive sense. Don’t be surprised if the free-scoring hosts make their presence felt here.
The scorers of two goals at the weekend, the Alkmaar lads can definitely score goals, and not just domestically.
Last time out in the UEL, they notched three against Galatasaray’s arch rivals Fenerbahce, thriving on the break, while they also scored three at home to Elfsborg in their first home Europa League game of the season. Such effort bode well, while they also suggest that odds of 5/4 are a little too large.
Athletic Bilbao vs Elfsborg - Both Teams to Score
In northern Spain, Bilbao and Elsborg will clash at San Memes, where the hosts typically do their best work. They’ve won each of their home games in the Europa League so far this term, keeping clean sheets in both. That doesn’t exactly scream ‘Both Teams to Score’, I know, but bear with me.
The Swedish visitors have proved themselves to be a serious offensive force in the Europa League this season, even away from home, where they’ve scored five goals, scoring twice away to Alkmaar, notching three against Galatasaray in Istanbul.
In each of their away games so far, the team managed by Oscar Hiljemark have struggled defensively, conceding a whopping seven goals, but they’ve created lots, while they’ve shown no shortage of end-product either, and that’s enough for me to conclude that odds of 21/20 are too good to miss.
Twente vs Union SG - Twente to Score Over 1.5 Goals
Finally, we’re back in the Netherlands, where Twente and Union SG clash in a Dutch-Belgian showdown.
The hosts come into this fixture in solid scoring form having scored two or more goals in each of their last three games, as well as in four of their last five.
In the Europa League, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag, but they did recently score twice against Nice, while they’re up against a Union SG side that hasn’t shown a great deal of defensive solidity, despite not conceding a glut of goals.
When last in action on the road in this competition, the visitors lost by a goal to nil against Midtjylland, but they could easily have conceded more, surrendering 15 shots and an xG of 1.78. Against an in-form Twente attack, I’m betting on them to concede multiple goals on Thursday.
