The build up to what is always a festive period jam-packed with British football continues on Thursday, with Tottenham and Man United battling it out for a place in the EFL Cup semi-finals.
It’s been a tough month or so for Spurs and Ange Postecoglou, whose tactics have been subject to no shortage of scrutiny. Can the Aussie show that his team is ready to challenge for silverware by making the final four of this competition? Read on for our Tottenham vs Man United prediction and picks.

For the Tottenham vs Man United match prediction, we believe the final score will be a 3-1 win for the hosts based on our analysis.
Both teams come into this game off the back of excellent weekend results, so confidence should be high all round, but it is the hosts who have more about them offensively, as we saw when the teams last met.

Tottenham vs Man United head-to-head statistics
This will be the second time that the pair have met this season. Back in late September, Spurs battered United at Old Trafford, winning by three goals to nil in convincing fashion. When the pair last met in North London, Spurs won by two goals to nil.
Tottenham vs Man United preview
This match will be played on 19/12/2024 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Kick off will be at 20:00 GMT.
The pressure was definitely on Spurs and Ange ahead of Sunday’s trip to the south coast, and had they lost that game, this would likely have been a must-win game for the Aussie and his men.
Fortunately, despite fielding what can only be described as a depleted side, Tottenham ran out comfortable winners at St. Mary’s blowing their opponents away with a devastating and decisive first-half display, scoring five goals without reply. Following that effort, they’ll fancy themselves to kick on and enter the busy Christmas period off the back of an EFL Cup quarter-final win.
As far as Rubern Amorim and Manchester United are concerned, the previous weekend was also a successful one. It looked for all to see that the Red Devils were about to be downed by their city rivals, with them trailing by a goal to nil as the game neared its end at the Etihad.
Much to the surprise and disgust of the home-team fans, though, the United players had something up their sleeves, equalising through an 88th minute penalty, converted by captain Bruno Fernandes, before Amad Diallo completed the comeback two minutes later.
That’s now two away wins on the spin (in all competitions) for Thursday’s visitors, who may just fancy themselves to get the job done in North London, though they’ll likely need to improve defensively if that’s to happen.
Tottenham vs Man United Betting tips
Ahead of Thursday’s EFL Cup clash, two player bets appeal.
James Maddison to Score
One of several who took advantage of facing a Southampton defence that wasn’t at the races on Sunday, James Maddison has shouldered more of a scoring burden this season, notching seven goals, which is three more than he did last term.
The Englishman has always been known for his ability to strike from outside of the box, but by showing lots of crafty movement, he now looks like a player capable of getting into the penalty area, as he’s done to devastating effect in recent times.
To be honest, ahead of a match against a United defence that is yet to really improve, I’m not convinced that odds of 10/3 accurately reflect how dangerous Maddison can be in the final third.
At the end of the day, this is a player who averages 0.61 goals per 90 minutes in the league this term, while it’s not as if he’s only scored against the lesser teams, notching twice away at the Etihad in November.
Throw onto the fire that Maddison averages 2.37 shots and 1.32 shots on target per 90 minutes and he’s hard to resist at odds of 10/3.
Pape Matar Sarr to Receive a Card
I’m also taken by midfield patroller Pape Matar Sarr to pick up a card. The Senegalese midfielder has arguably been one of Spurs’ best performers this season. His energy and box-to-box running help Thursday’s hosts to be at their best, but let's face it, he’s no stranger to gaining attention from the referee, especially in big games.
Booked recently against Chelsea, against whom he made a couple of rather overzealous challenges, Sarr also went into the book during the previous round of the EFL Cup, making
In the league, the 22-year-old averages 1.89 fouls per 90 minutes, while he’s also received an average of 0.32 cards per 90 minutes.
As is the case above, odds of 16/5 simply look on the generous side given Sarr’s general behaviour.
