On Tuesday evening, the EFL Cup is back and we’ve got down to the nitty gritty. At Emirates Stadium, Arsenal and Newcastle will clash in the first leg of the semi-finals.
Can the Gunners improve after their rather underwhelming 1-1 draw away against Brighton at the weekend? Or will the Magpies extend their impressive winning run? Read on for our Arsenal vs Newcastle predictions, tips and preview.
Arsenal vs Newcastle prediction
For the Arsenal vs Newcastle match prediction, we believe the final score will be a 1-1 draw based on our analysis.
The Gunners haven’t exactly fired on all cylinders of late, while the Magpies are in strong form, though as they look to make use of home advantage in the second leg, we probably shouldn’t expect the visitors to explode into life in North London.

Arsenal vs Newcastle head-to-head statistics
This will be the second time that the pair have faced each other this season, with Newcastle winning by a goal to nil in the Premier League back in November. Each team has won two of the last five renewals of this fixture.
Arsenal vs Newcastle preview
This match will be played on date at Emirates Stadium. Kick off will be at 20:00 GMT.
The festive period was a particularly fruitful one for the Gunners, who despite having little time to rest, won four games on the spin between December 18th and New Year’s Day.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t extend their winning run (in all competitions) to five on Saturday evening, drawing 1-1 away at Brighton. It wasn’t an overly encouraging performance from Mikel Arteta’s men either. Fortunately, thanks to Liverpool’s draw with Manchester United, they didn’t fall any further behind in the title race.
For the Magpies, it was another pleasing weekend, with Eddie Howe’s men returning from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with all three points, courtesy of goals from Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, who scored for the eighth game on the bounce.
Right now, there’s no team in better form than Tuesday's visitors, who will arrive at the Emirates having won each of their last six matches in all competitions, scoring a pleasing total of 18 goals, conceding just two in the process.
Arsenal vs Newcastle betting tips
Two bets stand out from a value point of view ahead of Tuesday’s EFL Cup clash.
Under 2.5 Goals
Given that this is the first leg, it wouldn’t be hugely surprising if things were a little cagey, while it’s not as if either side has made a habit of conceding goals of late, so should ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ be available at odds of 11/10? Probably not.
Let’s face it, as sturdy as they are, under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners have hardly developed into an exciting side. The hosts are all about functionality and grinding it out, which is why they’re seemingly not averse to a low-scoring game, even at home, where less than three goals have been scored in three of the five games played since the start of December.
Moreover, the Gunners know how to keep teams at bay at home, keeping a clean sheet in five of their last six matches at the Emirates. Factor in that the visitors arrive off the back of four clean sheets in six and a low-scorer seems far from unlikely.
Anthony Gordon Over 0.5 Shots on Target
I also like the look of visiting forward Anthony Gordon to work the home keeper at least once, particularly at odds of 23/20.
Having scored at the weekend, Gordon, who registered two shots on target at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, is no stranger to firing off shots, while he’s used to hitting the target too, which he’s done at least once in six of his last eight appearances, registering eight shots on target during that time.
Only the red-hot Alexander Isak has taken more shots for Newcastle this season, while only Isak has registered more shots on target. Gordon’s pace on the break could be vital for the Magpies, who’ll undoubtedly sit in and look to hit on the break, so don’t be surprised if the Englishman gets in behind a couple of times and works David Raya.
