It’s that time again when the league action is pushed aside for a weekend. The FA Cup takes over, with several exciting fixtures set to take place, including a game at St. Mary’s, where Southampton and Burnley clash.
Can the Saints take advantage of playing Championship opposition and build on last weekend’s win against relegation rivals Ipswich? Read on for our Southampton vs Burnley prediction, tips and preview.
Southampton vs Burnley prediction
For the Southampton vs Burnley match prediction, we believe the final score will be a 2-2 draw based on our analysis.
The Saints may currently be in the Premier League, but they’re clearly on their way back to the Championship, while the Clarets are one of those likely to come up from the second tier, so there’s likely not a great deal between the pair. Both should fancy themselves to get a result, so we ought to see an entertaining game between two teams going for it.

Southampton vs Burnley preview
This match will be played on 08/02/2025 at St. Mary’s Stadium. Kick off will be at 15:00 GMT.
Is Southampton’s season over? Well, mathematically, it isn’t. It is still possible for the Saints to turn things around and pull off what would be a truly great escape. However, let’s be honest, that isn’t going to happen.
Collecting just their second full set of points last weekend, the Sains got the better of relegation rivals Ipswich, winning away from home, recording their first league victory in just under three months. A relief indeed for Ivan Juric, who took over from Russell Martin back in December.
That win against the Tractor Boys isn’t likely to act as a springboard for further league success, but Saturday’s hosts could use it as a platform from which to build an FA Cup run.
For the Clarets, who are looking to swap places with the Saints, much as they did at the end of the previous campaign, the Championship campaign is going rather well, with Scott Parker’s men sitting in second, narrowly inside the automatic promotion places.
Given that they are going for promotion, the FA Cup may not be the biggest priority for the visitors, though given how much the Saints have struggled in the Premier League this season, this should be seen as an opportunity, and let’s face it, and win against top-level opposition would only help Parker’s team to build momentum.
Southampton vs Burnley betting tips
One bet stands out from a value point of view ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup action at St. Mary’s.
Over 2.5 Goals
For the hosts, this is an opportunity to give themselves a real confidence boost, especially offensively, so we can expect to see Juric’s men get on the front foot, just as they did when facing Championship opposition at home during the previous round of this competition. On that occasion, they scored three goals.
The visitors will also see this as a chance to do some damage against an all-too-open Saints side, especially on the break, so we can expect to see them get involved offensively too, which only adds to the chances of a relatively high-scoring game unfolding at St. Mary’s.
Let’s face it, the hosts have struggled to stay away from high-scorers, with each of their last seven games (in all competitions) containing at least three goals.
Scoring goals away from home, often on the break, is something that this Burnley team has done well this term. They are the Championship’s third highest road scorers.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Saints have now faced Championship opposition on three occasions this season, producing scores of 3-5 (win), 3-2 (win) and 3-0 (win). Each of those games has been rather open and packed with chances, and I’m just not sure that the early market has taken that into consideration enough, leaving me to conclude that ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ is a decent bet at the currently available odds.
