At odds of 23/20, I can’t help but conclude that a bet going against the home win offers value, and that bet is ‘Lyon +1 Handicap’. The visitors failed to get the job done in the first leg, but as far as I’m concerned, they were the better side, and not just by a little bit.

Not only do they look a better footballing side than what continues to be a quite disjointed United team, but Thursday’s visitors simply pack more of a punch, and if this becomes an end-to-end shootout, which isn’t unlikely, they’ve got the firepower to do the most damage, or at the very least, they’ve got enough forward quality to avoid defeat at Old Trafford.

For my money, the early market doesn’t accurately reflect the likelihood of a result other than a home win, so taking ‘Lyon +1 Handicap’ offers a decent edge at 23/20.

Georges Mikautadze 1+ Shots on Target

Georges Mikautadze registered a shot on target in the first leg, shooting three times in total, and it would be something of a surprise if the goal-hungry forward failed to make Andre Onana work on Thursday evening.

No player has taken more shots than the Georgian for Lyon in all competitions this season, with the 24-year-old averaging an eye-catching 3.47 shots on target per 90 minutes.

We’re also talking about a player who averages 1.41 shots on target per 90 in all competitions, averaging 1.34 in the Europa League. In each of his last 12 starts for club and country, Mikautadze has registered a shot on target.

Quite frankly, odds of 4/5 are not an accurate reflection of how prolific Mikautadze is in terms of shots on target, so my advice is to grab this quite hefty chunk of value while it’s on offer.

Georges Mikautadze to Score

Despite not scoring in the first leg, Mikautadze offered a clear threat, there can be no denying that. He came close on several occasions, while he got himself back on the scoresheet at the weekend, scoring for the ninth time in his last eight matches for club and country. Make no mistake about it, this is a prolific scorer in the making, one who could very easily do considerable damage at Old Trafford.

As mentioned above, don’t be fooled by the fact that United beat Sociedad by four goals to one at home during the previous round. The hosts continue to struggle defensively, while the visitors, as we saw last week, have the tools to create plenty.

Lyon’s forward line should be a serious threat on Thursday night, especially on the break, and given the quality of the Georgian as a marksman, odds of 5/2 are too good to miss.

In all competitions this season, the man who notched three goals at Euro 2024 is averaging an impressive 0.70 goals per 90 minutes, also averaging a rather chunky 0.61 expected goals per 90. Such numbers tell me that he's no 5/2 shot here, despite this being an away game at the business end of the competition.
